Humanities Fashion Decade Project in "What is Beauty?" Unit

Directions:  You are to research a period in history (decades in America, or a specific time period in another country, or your own ethnic heritage) in relation to historical events (war/peace, famine, plagues/disease, natural disasters, etc.), socio-economic conditions, religion, politics, and cultural icons.  Then look specifically at the fashion.  Analyze the trends with an understanding of the perspective of the times.  How was beauty defined?  How did women or men attempt to showcase their beauty/style?  Why?  What statement is the fashion making?  Why?  Then plan an oral presentation that summarizes your findings in a interesting manner that will capture your audience’s attention (Prezi's, Powerpoints, Films, Videos, or other forms of digital/artistic presentations are encouraged)

You need to supply a complete Works Cited with perfect MLA format.  Your minimum source number is 5.  I want to see books as well as web sites.  You will then present this information via an oral presentation that is both interesting and engaging.  The following list is meant to inspire your imagination; you are welcome to make your own suggestions for your research. The rubric follows the list.

Common Core Standards:

Analyze a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific individuals, ideas, or events interact and develop over the course of the research.

Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words in order to address a question or solve a problem.

Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives; synthesize comments, claims, and evidence made on all sides of an issue; resolve contradictions when possible; and determine what additional information or research is required to deepen the investigation or complete the task.

Present information, findings, and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and a range or formal and informal tasks.

Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.

Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating a command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. (See grades 11-12 Language standards 1 and 3 on page 54 for specific expectations.)
